Masashi Kato is a full-time lecturer in the Technical Japanese Program at the University of Washington, Adjunct Faculty Member in the Division of Continuing Studies at Seattle Pacific University, and, since 1989, Director of The Total Immersion Japanese Language and Culture Camp for high school students, funded by the Japan-America Society. He is a charter member, coordinator, and past chair of the Washington State Japanese Language Curriculum Guideline Committee, which is formulating a uniform state-wide Japanese language curriculum. In 1985, he developed the original curriculum for Japanese language and culture for the Bellevue School District and taught there for six years.
Mr. Kato is a nationally-recognized instructor of Japanese who is routinely invited to present his innovative teaching methods at conferences across the United States, including the Mid-Atlantic States Conference at Virginia, a conference of the entire University of California system: Teaching and Learning Asian Languages in California, the Northeast Association of Secondary Teachers of Japanese Spring Conference at New York. His current research focuses on the effective methods for oral competency training and its evaluation, and on the effectiveness of various methods of using video segments to augment oral communication drills and improve the teaching of cultural interaction.
