Japanese Proficiency Test

The Technical Japanese Masters Program administers a Japanese language placement test to determine an applicant's level of knowledge of Japanese. The test is required in order to be admitted into the program.

The test has three components:

  • Kanji
  • Grammar
  • Conversation

The placement test ensures that applicants have a sufficient knowledge base in Japanese to pursue studies in TJP. The test is not "pass/fail." Rather, it is an evaluation of a student's current language level. If an applicant does not have sufficient skills, TJP faculty will recommend an appropriate course of study, and the test can be taken again. Study options may include an "Intensive Summer Language Program."

The test does not target a specific set of facts. Because of the nature of the test, there are no study materials.

To schedule an appointment to take the test, e-mail Masashi Kato at: mkato@u.washington.edu.

If applicants are unable to take the test at the University of Washington campus, they can arrange for a "proctor" to administer the written portion. The oral interview is conducted by telephone.
